MineNews 08

The Last Mineworker in North Wales:  RoseMarie was delighted to receive an invitation to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her service & dedication to retired miners & widows.  Many of you will remember RoseMarie Williams who worked (unpaid for many years) in the Miner’s Office on Grosvenor Road, Wrexham until last year.  A fitting thank you for over 50 years of unbroken service.

School Projects:  John & Keith have been visiting schools, this time in the Wrexham area.

Days out:  We are visiting Big Pit on the weekend of Friday June 15th & Saturday 16th to see a play called ‘One Big Blow’ being held there.  It is a play with songs, with a cast of six men who sing a cappella, and the story is all about miners who play in the colliery band.  It is a rarely seen production and is going there on tour by a theatre company from Manchester.

Whilst there, we will obviously have the tour of Big Pit too.

There are one or two places in South Wales that we would like to have a look at whilst we are there.  Anyone who would like to come should phone or email me at the address/numbers below.

Following on from this, I’m afraid that due to heavy family commitments this year, it has been difficult for Alan & I to be able to plan our usual days out.  If anyone feels like stepping into the breach for a short time we would be most grateful.

Dedication of the Gresford Window

NWMAT members are cordially welcomed to attend a ceremony to commemorate the inauguration of the window at Llay Miners' Heritage Centre on Thursday
24th May at 7 p.m.

The window contains two pieces of work commissioned by us and designed by Derek Buick of Headland Design, Farndon. The first is a copy of the mural in Gresford Church in memory of the Gresford Coal Mine Disaster of 22nd September 1934. The second is a window blind containing the names of the 266
miners who were killed.

Canon David Griffiths will read the dedication Canon Pauline Walker of Llay will perform the blessing. It is hoped that the mayor and mayoress of Wrexham will be in attendance.

As space inside the gallery is limited [max. 20 people], we are requesting that only family be present there for the ceremony. We will be setting up a video link to the main function room for others to be able to follow the short service. You will be able to view the window afterwards.
For catering purposes [tea and biscuits] I would be grateful if you could
let me know if anyone is intending to come.

       Kind regards

N.W.M.A.T updates

Just some snippets from the mine news 7

Mobile Classroom/Museum:  We are in the process of applying for funding for a mobile classroom.  We managed to find an ex library bus at a good price which we are refurbishing to be used as a multi purpose vehicle, such as an educational vehicle, mining museum & recording studio for taking to schools, fetes, open days etc.

Point of Ayr Memorial
Project:  John has had good news regarding this project. There is now no objection to the stub headgear being moved to Ffynnongroew subject to planning & health & safety issues.

Mines Rescue Station:  The wind damaged tarpaulins have been renewed.  We still need to keep an eye on the situation.  The Mines Rescue Station will be 100 years old next year.  I think that it deserves some recognition. It would be nice to have copies of photographs of as many Rescue Teams as possible, if there are any knocking about.  An interesting fact mentioned the other day is that there are still at least 6 ex-team members living in Llay.

Point of Ayr Reunion: The POA reunion was a massive success.  There were about 160 people in attendance.   They came from everywhere.

The Rugby Club, Rhyl did a smashing spread & I am sure that the bar takings must have been good.  Photographs were taken & a DVD is going to be made for interested parties.  Well done to John & Trish who organised it.  John is considering making it into an annual event.

Days out:  There are lots of ideas in the pipeline now the weather is getting better.  It makes more sense to make our own way on some but others we hire a minibus on a first come, first serve basis, giving priority to older members.  Car sharing is a good idea too.  Dependent on numbers to go further afield we can hire a coach & driver.
